Gates Sidecar Cup Preview

MONAGHAN LOGISTICS, GATES SIDECAR CUP – Sunday 4th April.

The fields keep on getting stronger as the Olympic Park Speedway season progresses. This week, the field is added to with the addition of Bottrell, from Queensland and Menadueand Plaisted, both coming from Adelaide and Stephens, from Broken Hill.

The regular suspects are in attendance as a tribute to the Gates family with this Sunday’s meeting being the best quality field ever put together to respect the Gates family’s contribution to Speedway in Mildura.

The heat is on at the top of the field where local World Champion and star, Warren Monson, with Andrew Summerhayes in the chair, the GOAT of World Sidecar speedway, the great World Champion, Darrin Treloar / Blake Cox, along with dual World Champion, Mick Headland / Brenton Kerr, former Aussie Champion, Mark Plaisted / Ben Pitt and local stars Byren Gates / Mick O’Loughlin, Neale Hancock / Brendan Johnson, AJ Pearce / Eli Bock and Simon Cohrs / Cam Diwell.

Pitted against the strong list mentioned are the Broken Hill contingent, with first appearance of the affable Rick “the Bartman” Stephens / Nick O’Brien for the season and then the Howse family, with “Uncle” Darren Howse / Jack Wheeler and then, youngsters, Max Howse / Riley Commons, who will represent the “Silver City” well. The Howse boys have ridden well all season and the younger lads are progressing by improving their speed whilst maintaining good safe lines in their racing. Stephens prior to injury in Adelaide earlier in the season was riding in superb form.

Visitors from South Australia are first time this season Kym Menadue / Eric Melton and the aforementioned, Dave Bottrell / Darcy Risstrom, then Klae Hobbs / Colby Higgins, BrentenDwyer / Jamie Flood and Chris Walker / Phil Bourne-Bryant, from Melbourne, make up a spectacularly talented field of competitors to fight for the Gates Sidecar Cup for 2021.

There is no doubt that riders are just coming to Mildura to get significant “track time” prior to the KW Earthmoving & Concreting, 2021 Australian Sidecar Championship,to be held over the Anzac Day weeknd on 23rd and 24th April, but the real winners in that regard, are the valued patrons of speedway in Mildura because they are seeing the “best of the best” against the rest and as spectators, are able to see some wonderful exponents of Australian Sidecar Speedway.

As usual, Olympic Park gates will be open at 5:00pm with patrons advised that there is ample Free Grandstand accommodation available around the venue or folk can bring a chair or a rug and avail themselves of the spacious grassy banks which surround the Stadium.

Spectators are reminded that the Club requires you to be Covid compliant by using the identification method required or by taking direction and advice from the Club Covid Marshal, so as to maintain our strong “crowd integrity” history.
