SEDGMEN WINS LYONS TROPHY

Merbein local Justin Sedgmen finished his Australian Season off in style after winning his second Mallee Bearings Jason Lyons Trophy in tricky conditions on Sunday night at Olympic Park Speedway.

Sedgmen  dominated proceedings going straight through to the final on a maximum score, joining him in the final was good mate and Australian number two Sam Masters on 11 points, Adelaide’s Rob Branford on 10 points and rounding out the final to spots in the 5 rider final was reigning Victorian Champion Ty Proctor and local Merbein hard charger Jack Fallon.

As the tapes went away Sedgmen made a lighting start with Masters going along with him, Sedgmen maintained a small advantage all race using the inside line with Masters scrapping the air fence to try and find some drive to pass but ran out of laps in doing so the final placing’s where Sedgmen, Masters, Branford, Proctor and Fallon coming home in 5th.

Sedgmen added ” it always nice to come ride at home and win Jason’s meeting he has done a lot for me over the years and while the club continue to run his meeting I will ride in it every year”.

Patrons were treated to three support classes with Bryen Gates and Michael O’loughlin taking out the sidecar races despite being pushed all the way by Neale Hancock and Brendan Johnson.

Chris Ferguson went through the meeting undefeated in the B grade solos showing his vast experience against the younger riders.

New Australian 250cc Speedway Champion Declan Knowles took out the 250cc class showing everyone why he is the new Australian Champion with a dominating display young local Oliver Hamilton did though mix it with Knowles in a few races

On a sad note local speedway and all round motorcyclist Jason Stewart announced his retirement on the night from competitive speedway. Stewart has been racing for 20 plus years and now its time to turn his attention to his son Jordan’s career.

Next meeting at Olympic Park Speedway will be a sidecar four teams tournament on Saturday February the 13th.
