BATCH AFTER SEDGMENS TITLE
Dess in track return!
Top solo action will be the order of the night when the Jason Lyons Trophy gets under way at Mildura’s Olympic Park pm Friday 30th December. Two meetings inside a week will be well appreciated by local and visiting patrons.
Lyons is one of Mildura’s prodigious speedway talents who retired in 2011. He is so revered in Australia’s Solo speedway ranks, so much so, that many Australian riders are keen to get their name carved on the prestigious Lyons Trophy.
A strong group of nine top class riders will contest the Lyons event with new Victorian Champion, Troy Batchelor being joined by high class visitors in Queensland Champion, Davey Watt and former Victorian Champion, Ty Proctor, who will be pitted against local star and reigning two time Lyons trophy winner Justin Sedgmen along with fellow locals, Jordan Stewart, Brodie Waters, Jaimon Lidsey and Cooper Riordan and Victorian visitor James Davies.
Sedgmen, Stewart, Lidsey and Riordan are fresh from a top four in last week’s very prestigious, Jack Young Cup at Gillman speedway, so they bring good and recent success to their home track. Proctor, like Sedgmen, has been travelling widely to get track time on the Australian Championship tracks at Gillman and Kurri Kurri in NSW, as they are keen on getting their best result from the 2017 Australian Title series early in January.
Batchelor who has just arrived back in Australia and is keen to get a practice in before the Australian Championship series. The former Speedway Grand Prix rider and Australian Champion added “Its good to get a hit out before the aussie titles. I have got all my gear from England over so hopefully things will work out alright. Im also looking forward to riding the new track I have heard some good things about it”.
Batchelor has never ridden the new lay out of the Olympic Park track the last time he rode at Olympic Park he beat local legend Leigh Adams in his last ever meeting on his home turf.
Fans will be in for a real treat where they will see the top riders in Batchelor, Sedgmen and Watt racing each other on more occasions during the night.
A strong group of “Young Guns” will be support for the Lyons Trophy with WA rider Declan Knowles, Queenslander, Josh Coyne, being joined by SA lads, Dakota Ballantyne, Rob Medson and Brayden McGuinness with locals, Cam Wrate, Chris Ferguson and Oliver Hamilton and visitors Aden Clare and Aaron Fulton all to contest the support class.
This will be a most even class as there is a balance of youth being joined by Ferguson and Wrate, who are re-launching their speedway career for fun. The younger lads are all on a massive learning curve as they ride in a class that they might have only dreamt about just a few short months ago.
Further support will come from the 250cc, Under 16 riders, who ride their machines on the big track, albeit that they are still riding in the Junior category. Patrons will be keen to see riders in this development class on the track, as the 250cc machine, in a full size frame, can look spectacular when ridden flat throttle.
As is usual at any Jason Lyons meeting, Jason insists on having local Sidecars on the program.
Local Sidecar organizer, Neale Hancock, with Brendan Johnston in the chair will contest against Nathan Cock/ Jack Wilson and regular visitor, Mark Radford / Blake Halls will enjoy the “comeback” ride of Chris Dess, who suffered horrific burns in a methanol fire many months ago. Dess has shown amazing resilience to still be wearing “pressure bandages” and yet, for the last couple of months has been having a “practice ride” at our regular Practice sessions. Through his injuries Chris is not able to “sweat”, as the rest of us do, so he will still be going through some discomfort controlling his body heat, but is so keen to ride to give him something else to focus on from just his healing over many months.
Again, Track Gates will open at 5:00pm and, as usual, a regular Junior program will begin around 6:00pm with Senior racing set to follow at 7:30pm.
Great Grandstand accommodation is available, Free of Charge and the Club advises that it provides a full catering service. There must be no BYO by law.
During December, Mildura Motor Cycle Club issued and distributed 10,000 Free Season Tickets to all the District’s Primary and Secondary schools as part of a program where the Club is attempting to keep a great “Family sport” affordable for local families. Every Primary or secondary student in Sunraysia received a Free Season ticket to Olympic Park, for ANY meeting, including Championship events.
The FREE Season Ticket initiative has been well received right around Sunraysia and kids are encouraged to get parents or guardians to bring their young folk down to Olympic Park, which can be found, straight out 11street West. The Track can be found at the end of Winton Drive, towards the river from the western end of 11th Street.
