HEADLAND/WHETSTONE TAKE OUT SPECTACULAR

In an exciting final meeting for the 2016-17 speedway season visitors Trent Headland and Daz Whetstone, along with Damian Niesche/Mitch Spear fought out the 40th Mildura Motor Cycle Club Sidecar spectacular at Olympic Park on Saturday night. Headland said that it was only in the last week or sale that his mechanics had been able to get the bike running properly. “It wasn’t quite right early on the might but we got it running at the right time and now we are looking forward to a succession of big sidecar meetings being held over coming weeks,” Headland said after the meeting. He was happy to receive the 20th Curly Carmes Memorial trophy which accompanied the event – presented by the son of Keith and Betty Carmes, Rodney Carmes and Les Gates, winner of the very first Mildura speedway sidecar spectacular held back in 1977. In the final Headland led from Niesche from the gate but Warren Monson/Andrew Summerhayes made a lunch from the outside but could not get around and a lap later clipped the bike in front resulting in passenger Andrew Summerhayes coming off but falling on his feet and scampered away unhurt. Third place in the final went to Byron Gates and Mick O’Loughlin. The event was held with seven riders in two groups and the top point scorers made it straight i9nto the final. The highest point scorer in the A Group was Headland with 12 points from Monson on nine, AJ Pearce 8, Arron and Teagan Hartwig 6 points and Paul Donnelly on five. In the B Group the highest point scorer was Gates and O’Louglin with 11 points, ahead of Niesche 10pts, Neale Hancock/Brendan Johnson on 8 points, Klae Hobbs/Liam Cock 5 and Mark Radford/Blake Halls 5. In the A Group semi final Monson defeated AJ Pearce with Donnelly third while the Hartwig’s, after vying for the lead struck bike trouble and retired. The B Final was re-run after a spectacular spill on the VIP corner in which the referee at first excluded Mark Radford, but this was changed when Klae Hobbs indicated that his kike engine had stopped and this was the cause of the trouble. In the re-run Niesche was able to hold off Hancock, who led from the gate, with Radford finishing third. The Flat track masters was an exciting contest with Rohan Tegart, Brodie and Nick Waters all having wins on the night. In the final Brodie Waters snatched victory from Nick Waters in the last few metres with Tegart a close third and Jess Headland 4th. Bob Kemp of Broken Hill, who has just completed 40 years of competition, was the main winner in the classic sidecar races. The Motor Cycle Club’s next speedway meeting will be around November while King of the Murray will be held on the moto cross track at Easter time and a classic meeting will be held as part of the Ulysses event over the Queen’s birthday weekend.
