40 YEARS OF SIDECAR SPECTACULAR

On Saturday night, Olympic Park patrons will see the staging of the 40th Mildura Sidecar Spectacular with a great field engaged to contest the Riordan’s Paint & Panel event.

Over the years the “Speccy” has seen the best ever talent of the Australian Sidecar fraternity on show at Olympic Park and our loyal patrons have witnessed some mighty fine racing over a lot of years. Many winners of the Mildura Spectacular have gone on to win the Australian Championship as it has always taken a good team to win the meeting, as it did the very first time in 1977 when the local Gates brothers, John and Les, won the meeting

Heading the list of fine riders on Saturday are Trent Headland / Daz Whetstone with Arron and Teagan Hartwig, along with Damien Niesche / Mitch Spear, all from SA and our own locals stars in Warren Monson / Andrew Summerhayes and Byren Gates / Mick O’Loughlin who will rate highly along with Neale Hancock / Brendan “Tubs” Johnson, Clint Mayes / Sean Coleby and AJ Pearce / Brodie Gebhart.

Other Mildura teams include Nathan Cock / Jack Wilson and Chris Dess / Cameron Diwell who will race with the other visitors in Klae Hobbs / Liam Cock and Dean Hobbs / Justin Richards against Mark Radford / Blake Halls, Paul Donnelly / Jake Roberts and Steve Brown / Colby Higgins.

Teams will be divided into two groups of seven riders each to contest the heats of the Spectacular, with each group have a semi final and then top riders out of each group coming together for the Curly Carmes Trophy.

Riders will be keen to get another good set of points scored at a high class meeting, as it will only get tougher in the weeks ahead as the Australian Title fields will be solid all the way through. A good result from tonight might see Australian Title selectors think more favourably ahead of another rider of similar class, when selections are made for the Qualifying meeting competitors.

The Mildura Flat Track Masters will be at it again with nine greats of the dirt track machines going at it as hard as they can. Featured riders will be last Flat Track winner Rowan Tegart, who will not have it all his own way against both Nick and Brodie Waters or the Stewarts, father Jason and fast son, Jordan, who will be mixing it with Jordan Giddings, Brenton Kerr, Chris Nimmo and Danny Glen.

These Flat trackers are always on edge for a win, or bragging rights over any other rider, regardless of their finishing position, so patrons will be set to find the fireworks are happening in the springtime and for the last “mayhem” of the season. Spectators have enjoyed the close racing and have witnessed some fabulous cornering and seeing riders diving in under each other in the corners to try and take an advantage.

Classic Sidecars are back in action once again as a support class to the riders in the Spectacular with Broken Hill evergreen, Rob Kemp / Peter Harvy pitted against locals Rod Gebhart / Nicholas Johns and Chris Wakefield / Naomi Bullock. The other rider in the field is Barossa Valley based Kristy Schultz with Jamie Knudsen in the chair. Kristy, the Mum of a 11 week old is joined by local girl, Naomi Bullock, proving that the girls are equals in speedway, especially Classic Speedway Sidecars.

Olympic Park gates will open at the regular time of 500pm with no Junior program to be as a curtain raiser, in favour of the small entry of Sidecars being slotted in amongst the senior events, making a full program of 34 events.

Patrons to Olympic Park are reminded that the Track has full catering facilities for both food and beverage and that there must be no BYO by Law. Ample grandstand accommodation is available free to all spectators with stands right around the Stadium. Patrons may choose to bring a chair or a rug and avail themselves of a nice spot on the grassy banks.

The Riordan’s Paint & Panel, Sidecar Spectacular will commence at 7:30 pm.
